Berlin is one of the world’s greatest marathons with the course running through the former East and West Berlin. It is completely flat, asphalted and traffic free. This combination of features makes Berlin famous as the place to go to get the fastest possible times. There is probably no finer race to say you got your PB! Taking place on Sunday 29th September 2019, it’s a marathon not to be missed.

About the Event:

The Berlin Marathon started in 1974 as a small event through the Grunewald forest near Berlin. Over the years the race has grown into one of the World Marathon Majors and onto the city streets.

The race starts on the six-lane Strasse des 17 Juni and is run in an average annual temperature of 13 degrees C (55 degrees F). The course takes in some of East and West Berlin’s great sights, before finishing just beyond the magnificent Brandenburg Gate and The Reichstag.

As well as the marathon, there is the International Breakfast Run on Saturday morning, which finishes in the 1936 Olympic Stadium, and is a thoroughly enjoyable event. You can also watch the Inline Skating on Saturday afternoon.

In the 2018 marathon Eliud Kipchoge of Kenya smashed the world record (previously set in Berlin in 2014 by Dennis Kimetto) by almost 1 minute and twenty seconds, with a new time of 2:01:39. The world record has been broken five times in Berlin over the past ten years.

Race day baggage options

Along with your 2019 BMW Berlin Marathon Race entry, you have a choice of race day baggage options. Each runner is required to make a choice from one of the 2 below options (to be made within the booking process).
1. Race day baggage – YES: This will allow you to take a small bag to the start area. Please note that at the finish you will have a longer wait than those who choose not to use this service.
2. Race day baggage –NO =Poncho Selected: Any clothes or personal items that you take to the start area will have to be disposable and will not be transported to the finish line. You will be provided with a poncho by the race organisers when you finish and will have a quicker exit from the finish area.

2019 BMW Berlin Marathon: Event Details

41,283 runners from 122 countries entered the 45th edition of the race, an Abbott World Marathon Major and an IAAF Gold Label Road Race.

The BMW Berlin Marathon follows a looped course that takes in 10 Berlin neighbourhoods and starts and finishes on Straße des 17 Juni near the Brandenburg Gate. What follows is 26.2 miles of fascinating landmarks, including the Siegessäule column, Berlin Cathedral, the State Opera House and Potsdamer Platz . The course itself is famously flat and quick, with plenty of world records having been set there throughout the years. Along the route you’ll see frequent refreshment and aid stations, which serve water, sports drinks, energy gels and fruit to the runners.

Friday 27th September 2019

Please make your own arrangements to fly to Berlin and transport from Berlin airport to your chosen hotel. We give full details of how to get around Berlin in our Final Instructions.

We highly recommend pre-purchasing a Berlin City Pass permitting you to travel on the overground/underground and buses throughout your stay. Passes can be purchased for a variety of durations. This will save long queueing to purchase individual tickets. More information can be found here.

Sports Travel guides will be at the hotel throughout today to welcome you. Depending on your arrival time today, you may have time to head to the marathon expo to collect your bib number. Guide will accompany those who have arrived on the morning flights.

Saturday 28th September 2019

Breakfast at hotel.

If you are taking part in the Breakfast Run, today is the day for this, starting at 09.30am. Guide will accompany group to the race start. The route is approx 6km. If you haven’t been to the Expo on Friday, you can go directly from the Olympic Stadium by U-Bahn to collect your bib number and any pre-ordered items.

For those not doing the Breakfast Run, guide will accompany the group to the Expo at a set time.

The marathon expo features different stands for sports performance, functional wear, endurance sports, medicine, active tourism, and much more.

You can also watch the Inline Skating at the marathon start line or at a location closer to the hotel. The start is usually at 3.30pm close to the Brandenburg Gate. The rest of your day is free for sightseeing!

Sunday 29th 2019: BMW Berlin Marathon Race Day

The start is at 09.15am, with 4 starting waves. Travel is free for runners using public transport today (you must be wearing your bib). The start and finish areas are on Straße des 17 Juni, between the Brandenburg Gate and Kleiner Stern.

At the finish line, don’t forget to return your timing chip into one of the buckets provided (non-returned chips incur a €25 fee).

After you have finished, our guide will welcome you back at the hotel to congratulate you on your success!

The 4 star Berlin Mark Hotel is ideally located for the start and finish of the Berlin Marathon, with a 10 minute walk to the trains at the Zoologischer Garten Train Station.
