The Comrades Marathon was first held 1921 when war veteran & SA Railways engine driver Vic Clapham decided to create a ‘living memorial’ to his “comrades” who had suffered and died in the Great War. That first race ran from Pietermaritzburg to Durban, and the event has alternated start points between the two cities ever since. The 2023 event will be the 96th edition of the race, and will also be a ‘Down Run’ (of 90km) starting from Pietermaritzburg.
