How Mass Participation Events Will Return Stronger in 2022
Mass participation events have been sorely missed over the last 18 months. As we began to follow restrictions, it wasn’t safe to take part in runs with thousands of others and lockdown meant the community had to get creative.
The events you know and love may have moved to a virtual model to avoid missing out, or maybe they have been postponed until until they are deemed safe to host. Now, with the announcement that mass participation events are making a comeback, we know they will be stronger than ever in 2022.
The iconic New York City Marathon finish line
As restrictions lifted in the UK on July 19, a number of events were able to return within in the same week. With scientific research showing that COVID-19 is less transmittable outdoors, the likes of This Mum Runs community, parkrun and ASICS London 10k were able to make safe returns, within safety guidelines.
The Irish running community can now look forward to taking part in running events in the UK very soon. The 2021 Great North Run and the London Marathon both take place in just a few short months!
The Great North Run will be held on September 12 in Newcastle for its 40th edition of the event. Renowned for its hospitality, Newcastle is the perfect host for such a well-loved half marathon – the largest in the world. Irish runners will undoubtedly be preparing to participate. To get the most out of this unique running experience you can travel with us this year. Take all the stress out of your race logistics by letting us take care of them. Then you’ll be free to focus on what matters – running!
Just a few short weeks later, one of the most iconic marathons will come home to London. Normally taking place in April, the event was postponed in 2020 to October and will now take place 12 months later, on October 3. The world-famous London Marathon provides spectacular views of some of the city’s beloved landmarks including the Tower of London and Buckingham Palace. You can find our guide to the perfect London Marathon weekend HERE.
Runners who are ready to get back to events can now book places and soak up the achievements they weren’t able to celebrate over the last year.
By 2022, running events will undoubtedly be back to their best and better. The appreciation of being able to travel and compete with fellow running enthusiasts will create an atmosphere even better than the ones the community are used to. Reuniting a beloved body of runners after the significant break will showcase how supportive runners are. Due to high numbers of event roll overs, deferrals, and limited fields there is likely to be a scarcity of entries for the most high profile events over the next few years. Be sure to book your place early, to guarantee your spot on the start-line in 2022!
