The next Abbott World Marathon Major? Introducing the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon
This year Sports Travel International will be sending runners to one of the world’s most spectacular and diverse cities for the first time. The Sanlam Cape Town Marathon is set to be the latest marathon to be added the prestigious list of Abbott World Marathon Majors – elevating an already renowned event to an equal status with London, Berlin, New York, Chicago, Tokyo and Boston. As an official candidate race, Cape Town could achieve the coveted major status in as little as three years.
The 2022 Sanlam Cape Town Marathon will take place on October 16th, 2022. The marathon is open to a wide range of running enthusiasts from social runners to elite athletes.
It has been growing in popularity for the better part of the last decade, with a route that offers spectacular ocean scenery and mountain views while passing many of the City’s great attractions.
Indeed, South Africa’s ‘Mother City’ is more than just a modern metropolis. It is a catalyst for providing outstanding visitor experiences with its unique and breath-taking sights of one of the world’s most diverse and picturesque cities. Along the spectacular route, you will take in the famous natural icon of Cape Town Mountain, the Atlantic Ocean, as well as many of the city’s great attractions from street art to the Madiba Statue at the City Hall, to the hustle and bustle of Woodstock.
The marathon features extraordinary dry weather and an average early morning temperature of 14C. Running conditions on this flat and fast course are exceptional! The comprehensive race infrastructure includes multiple water and feed stations along the course.
This tour package is synonymous with the ultimate sports travel experience where you will be able to combine sport with leisure. Plus, there are a selection of distances on offer, so even your travel partner could sign up for a 5k or 10k race.
Barry Van Blerk, Managing Director of Sanlam Cape Town Marathon, said: “The route has been designed for convenience but also to maximise participants’ experience of all that Cape Town has to offer. Cape Town is consistently voted one of the most beautiful cities in the world, owing to the combination of city, mountain and sea all within view of each other. We are looking forward to working with Sports Travel International and welcoming their runners in October.”
